Is this You?
You like beautiful, unspoilt Lakes, Mountains and untouched countryside, and you are looking
for a typical traditional Spanish home or property with a tropical climate, and you want to
fully immerse yourself in the true Spanish way of life. You want a home or property in a safe,
close, and friendly community, Where the food is natural, organic, fresh and produced locally,
and the cost of living on average, is 50% cheaper than the coast. A place where the Airport
transfer time is around 30 minutes and where airlines still offer economical fares.
You want a home or property that is located within striking distance of historical attractions, steeped
in culture and Spanish traditions, that also has a vibrant exciting nightlife. A place where the
coastal towns and beaches of Nerja and Salobrena are within a one hour drive. If so, then the Granada
region is for you.
Granada is the place for you
Granada's Alhambra Palace is so famous that it was recently proposed as one of the "Wonders of the World". The Palace is a
unique example of the knowledge, crafts and creativity that disappeared with the Moors. Walking around
on a hot day you can hear the constant sound of running water re-routed from the mountains, using
irrigation techniques that are thousands of years old, gives you a strong sense of history, peace,
and well-being, and has to be visited when in the City.
The Sierra Nevada Mountains are beautiful at all times of the year, but in winter the ski resort
comes into its own. Thanks to its location in the south of Spain and its high altitude of 3300 metres
(the highest in mainland Spain) skiers of all abilities can enjoy the slopes in good weather. Purchasing
in an area near the ski resorts will always be a good investment.
Hidden Gems
Our first hidden gem is Alhama de Granada. This truly is a well kept Andalucian secret. Once a famous
Moorish stronghold, it nestles precariously on a vast gorge that dominates the surrounding countryside.
The history of Alhama de Granada can be traced to the very beginnings of civilisation in the Iberian
peninsular. Phoenician, roman, visigothic, and Moorish influences fuse with the architecture of the medieval
catholic Kings of the 14th century. It is also known in Spain for its hot springs and baths, which attracts
a small amount of visitors who wish to bathe in the hot sulphurous waters, which are considered beneficial
in cases of rheumatism and dyspepsia. Today, the town is a mixture of ancient and modern and looks over
some of the most spectacular scenery in Spain. In winter the view to the snow-capped mountains of the
Sierra Nevada is uninterrupted and majestic. In the summer, the locals spend their evenings and
weekends at our second hidden gem, Lake Bermejales.
Lake Bermejales is place of natural beauty, where the water is electric blue due to the lake having a sand bottom
that reflects the suns rays. It is often likened to the Caribbean Sea. The lake has a contrast of rocky alcoves
and miles of fine sandy beach (an inland beach.) The lake is surrounded by towering Mediterranean black pine trees
with a backdrop of photogenic mountains. The lake also opens up to a vast gorge where you can watch Eagles in their
natural habitat. The cliff-side also provide a great place for walking and taking in views of the serene sunsets. These
are wonderful examples of the contrasts in this region and we have only scratched the surface.
This region is the perfect place to live. It has a tropical climate, and an unbeatable way of life, and property
prices which are much lower than in other parts of southern Spain. Home buyers have been traditionally drawn to the
60 Km Costa tropical, particularly to the resorts of Nerja, Almunerca and Salobrena. However, with the advent of the
new road and motorway network in the region, linking Motril and Velez Malaga, more people are now choosing to move
inland to live in the heart of Granada's beautiful unspoilt countryside, in small towns and villages. One area of
Granada currently attracting great interest is the south west area, between Santa Fe and Alhama de Granada. Here you
can still find properties at bargain prices, and is a hotspot for potential property developers. You may be aware
that the area has been well presented on UK Channel 5's Property Developing
Abroad programme.
